Mural in Red Hook to raise awareness about endangered birds

A nearly 1,000-foot-long mural, or about three blocks, in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood raises awareness about the impact of climate change on migratory birds.

This mural called Migratory Pathways is located on a retaining wall on Bay Street near the Red Hook Ballfields and was created by local artist George Boorujy.

The mural represents eight migratory birds that pass through the city and are in a vulnerable situation.

The work is part of the Audubon Mural Project, a public art initiative of the National Audubon Society and Gitler and Gallery.

The mural was sponsored by the Red Hook Conservancy in partnership with NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks Program.

Since 2014, more than 100 murals have been painted depicting more than 150 birds threatened by the climate.

There are currently some 389 species of birds under threat and the murals are a reminder of what is at stake.
