The Popular Party surpasses the PSOE in votes and seats in European elections

MADRID- The socialist party (PSOE) won 20 seats in the European elections held on Sunday, only 2 MEPs below the Popular Party (PP), which resisted compared to the 2019 results.

The distance with the Popular Party became deeper and increased to 4 percentage points, while in the general elections of July 23 it was only 1.3 points.

The distance in votes between the two major parties also increased. In elections that both parties presented as a test of the strength accumulated by their national leaders, the PP surpassed the PSOE by almost 700,000 votes, while on July 23 the difference was just over 300,000.

The socialists lost one seat compared to the 21 they achieved in the 2019 European elections and obtained 5,244,610 votes with a percentage of counted votes greater than 99%, which was nearly 700,000 votes less than the ‘popular’. They remained, therefore, at 30.18% of support, four points below the PP, which obtained 34.20% and was the first force.

The PSOE thus lost the first position in the European elections in favor of the PP and fell 2.68 points compared to the 2019 elections, in which they exceeded 7,300,000 votes, although on that occasion the participation was much higher given that they coincided with regional and municipal authorities.

Regarding the general elections of July 2023, the PSOE continued to be the second force behind the PP although it obtained around 2 and a half million fewer votes, since 23J obtained 7,821,718 votes and 31.68% of support.

Indictment of Begoña Gómez

These elections were the first test that the PSOE faced throughout the national territory after the general elections of 23J and after the Government promoted an amnesty law to favor terrorists agreed with the Catalan independence parties, in exchange for their support for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez.

They also occurred after an electoral campaign marked by the investigation of the wife of President Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, for the crimes of influence peddling and corruption, and by the judge’s decision to summon her to declare the court as being investigated.

The judge investigating Begoña Gómez decided to summon her to testify on July 5, news that turned the campaign upside down and made the Executive react.

Sánchez said that there was an attempt to influence the results of 9J and several ministers to describe the judge’s decision as “strange.”

Milei and Palestine.

The race to the polls began with the Government’s clash with Argentine President Javier Milei, a conflict that the PSOE transferred to the elections by calling for “lefties” to vote, thus appropriating the term with which it refers to the ruling party.

Furthermore, Sánchez coincided with the announcement of the recognition of Palestine as a State in the middle of the campaign, an issue that is clear support for Hamas terrorism.
