$1 bills could cost up to $150,000 due to printing error

MIAMI.- One dollar bills are very common in the United States, however, there are some copies that can cost thousands of dollars due to their defects, unique designs or printing errors.

Such is the case of the one-dollar bills that were printed twice by the Federal Reserve in the wrong way with the same serial number 10 years ago.

If you have a dollar bill in your wallet, it may be one of these that are now highly sought after by collectors and can be worth up to $150,000 due to their rarity.

In November 2014, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) asked its Washington, DC facility to print a batch of one-dollar bills. Then, in July 2016, it sent the exact same request to its headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

What it means is that because of this two lots of US paper money worth one dollar were printed. That year, the first printing was distributed in the state of New York, and two years later, another exactly the same one arrived in Washington, which made the serial numbers of these bills counterfeit.

This lack of communication resulted in 6.4 million pairs of duplicate serial-numbered dollar bills being printed, meaning 12 million of them were put into circulation before the error was found.

These banknotes have the peculiarity that it is an extremely rare phenomenon, given that US currency regulations stipulate a unique number for each banknote in circulation.

The mistake went unnoticed until a banknote collector found an anomaly in the public documents of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the authorities had no choice but to accept the anomaly.

How to identify the bill with the printing error?

To know if your dollar bill is one of those two printed batches that could be worth a small fortune, you need to identify certain specific characteristics including:

The Series date located near the George Washington photograph should say “2013 Series.”

The bill must have a Federal Reserve “B” stamp located above the serial number.

The serial number must end with a star

y estar entre B00000001* – B00250000* o B03200001*-B09600000*.

It is important that you also know that for your bill to have this value, the other bill with the same serial number must be found.

If you find a bill with these three characteristics, consult with a numismatic expert or collector to confirm if the bill is one of those mentioned.

Only 9 found

Collectors have tried to gather as many of these examples as possible through the Zegers-Winograd Project, which aims to connect people with others who have matching issues in their possession, and thus facilitate the purchase, sale or exchange of the items. even bills.

However, despite the millions of bills that circulated, so far only nine pairs of these duplicate copies have been found in the country, and in total, about 10,000 $1 bills with these characteristics have been identified.

Experts say that, so far, none of the collectors with a pair of these bills has been willing to sell them. It is estimated that those pairs that have been matched and graded would sell for between $20,000 and $150,000, depending on the condition of the note and its serial number.
