200 straw bales caught fire in Dortmund on Thursday evening. The fire brigade went out to extinguish the fire well into the night.

For an unknown reason, several dozen straw bales caught fire in a field in Dortmund-Lanstrop on Thursday evening. The water supply initially caused problems for the fire brigade. After all, the emergency services used a cistern on a farm, according to the fire department.

The alarm went off at 7:40 p.m. The fire was reported at a farm on Bönninghauser Straße. When the fire brigade arrived, the piled up straw bales – according to the fire brigade 200 pieces – were fully engulfed in flames. The fire brigade announced that there was no danger from the smoke pollution.

The bales of straw are allowed to “burn down in a controlled manner,” said the fire brigade control center at around 9 p.m. The operation is expected to last well into Friday night, said a control center employee.

The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
