In San Juan there was a growth of more than 60% in housing construction

The province of San Juan registered growth population of 20.1% and an increase of 61.6% in the number of homes compared to 2010, according to the first numbers of the Census National Population, Households and Housing 2022. As detailed by the provincial government, in the last 12 years the number of houses has tripled.

Preliminary figures indicate that the population of San Juan is made up of 818,234 inhabitants: 418,550 are women (51.4%), 396,048 men (48.6%) and 279 are none of the above.

The houses registered in the census in 2022 were 265,434 between urban, rural and collective, while in the 2010 census 164,253 had been registered.

According to the analysis of the Institute of Economic Research and Statistics (IIEE), dependent on the Ministry of Finance of the province, the 61.6% increase in housing “reflects the implementation of the housing policies of the Provincial Executive.”

“San Juan is the province that builds the most houses in relation to its population: around 5,000 social homes per year, thus responding to social demand, and also acting as a strong driver of the local economy,” they highlighted in a statement.

And they added: “Through the Provincial Housing Institute, soft loans for construction are granted, and an innovative construction program for the middle class was launched that includes the delivery of urbanized lots.”

In this regard, the governor of San Juan, Sergio Uñac, stressed that in recent years construction has remained “one of the main engines of growth and generator of genuine work.”

“The construction and delivery of homes is one of the strongest policies promoted from our management and we continue to work hard in this line because there is still an unsatisfied demand. We know that one’s own house, the home, is a very important pillar and the dream of many San Juan families,” said the president.

The departments that increased their population the most were: Pocito, 40.1%; Saint Martin, 34.1%; Zonda, 33.8%; Ullum, 32.3% and Albardón, 30.7%, which shows the migratory movement from the Capital to the neighboring departments, since the Capital only grew by 4.3% in the last 12 years.

The only department with population decrease is Iglesia (-3.7% representing 1,313 people), however, this variation is the result of the methodological change between the Fact Census and the Law Census.

Under this criterion, the 2022 Census, in the department of Iglesia, those miners who remained in the camp on the day of the Census were counted in the departments where they have their habitual residence.
