PORTLAND.- Emergency equipment Oregon They rescued 28 people on Friday after they were trapped for almost half an hour, hanging upside down, at the top of a mechanical ride at a century-old amusement park.
The Portland Fire and Rescue Department said on social media site X that firefighters worked with Oaks Park engineers to manually lower the ride, but crews had been preparing to conduct a rope rescue if necessary. All trapped people were being evacuated and undergoing medical evaluation, and no injuries were reported.
One of the passengers with a pre-existing medical condition was taken to a hospital for evaluation as a precaution, Oaks Amusement Park said in a statement posted on social media. Doctors discharged all other passengers.
Portland firefighters said there were about 30 people on board. The amusement park’s statement says there were 28 passengers.
A video recorded by a passenger on a Ferris wheel located next to the affected amusement ride shows people sitting face down on the AtmosFEAR attraction, which was suspended in the air. The attraction works like a pendulum, and at one point can leave passengers completely upside down.
Oaks Park opened in 1905. Its website says it offers a “unique-in-Portland blend of modern thrills and turn-of-the-century charm in an attraction that has delighted generations of Northwest residents.”
