It seems that the two showrunners haven’t been able to bounce back, and their filmography is at a standstill… but not for long.

David Benioff et DB Weiss have brilliantly developed Game of Thrones for many seasons. At least, until the last one was broadcast… A hasty, disappointing end that failed to meet the expectations of its audience. And since then, it’s radio silence: the two directors are absent from the industry. Several of their post-GOT projects never even saw the light of day. The first in the list is a drama series HBO – announced before the last season of Game of Thrones – titled Confederate, and whose ambition was to deal with an alternate version of history where the Confederate States won the Civil War and created an America where slavery is still legal. Besides the highly debatable subject matter, the presence of two white men at the head of a series on slavery caused many negative reactions. Benioff et Weiss had also taken the time in 2017 to express themselves on this subject:

We expected some criticism. We know this is a sensitive subject. But it’s still brand new and nothing, absolutely nothing, has been written yet. So such indignation, we find that quite surprising… It’s a bit premature. It is true that we could plant ourselves with this story. But we haven’t even started it yet!

On the verge of materializing, the series never went beyond the stage of a simple idea and will have created a controversy without ever having really existed.

In the midst of the “Confederate” controversy, the creators of Game of Thrones defend themselves

The second aborted project, and not the least, is that of their arrival at Star Wars. Benioff et Weiss were set to oversee a new trilogy for the intergalactic franchise, preparing the first installment directly after the end of Game of Thrones. Of this unrealized trilogy, we only know one thing: the ambition was to explore the origins of the Jedi Order. A project quickly fell through when the two companions had to retire in 2019 to “reluctantlyto focus on a big deal they had just signed with Netflix: a $200 million exclusive deal to develop new movies and series for the streaming service.

Star Wars: finally, no trilogy for the showrunners of Game of Thrones

But then, what about it? For 2 years, the two creators have been working hard and producing what will be their comeback: a series adapted from the science fiction novel The three-body problem, signed Cixin Liu. The story tells of humanity’s first contact with a collapsing alien civilization that plans to invade Earth. But don’t panic: the book series ended in 2010, which leaves the two showrunners no leeway to improvise and complete the story themselves (let’s avoid a GOT 2.0). Next to Benedict Wong et Eiza Gonzalezthe series intends to bring back alumni from Game of Thrones as John Bradley, Liam Cunningham et Jonathan Pryce. The first images were unveiled last September, for a release date scheduled for later in 2023.
