Bad leadership, gossip, a lack of appreciation – there are many indications of toxic companies. What they have in common is that all employees are emotionally burdened. The result: More days off, colleagues leave the company and all the work is left to the rest of the employees.

“Toxic jobs often only turn out to be such when you’ve already arrived at the company,” says Tobias Zulauf. “Sometimes you recognize it beforehand – and then you should act quickly.” It supports entrepreneurs in positioning themselves as attractive employers. In the following article, he is happy to name seven clear warning signs that a toxic employer is behind the new job.

1. No interest in the applicant as a person

Applicants who don’t ask any personal questions from potential employers can assume that only their ability to work is of interest – but not their values and characteristics as a person.

2. Siez culture

Does the company only use formal address? This can indicate that one relies on distance and hierarchy as a leadership style. Factors such as motivation or fun at work play no role in this case. Attention: You cannot necessarily conclude that from the formal address alone, but it is always an indication.

3. More criticism than praise

If there is more criticism than praise, then that is certainly not unusual in German companies – this behavior is still not particularly motivating. As is well known, criticism and praise should be balanced.

4. Overtime is not compensated

Overtime is a matter of course for the future employer without offering a corresponding wage or time off in lieu? A lack of appreciation for the performance of the employees could hardly be expressed more clearly. Evidence of such behavior can also be found on platforms for evaluating employers.

5. Control instead of trust

Leaders with a toxic mindset control their employees at every opportunity. They assume that people will not perform unless they are monitored, admonished, and pushed.

6. Lack of team cohesion

A toxic atmosphere from the leadership inevitably spreads to the team. The people don’t work for each other, but find themselves in a kind of warlike conflict. Fighting is done with taunts and gossip, advanced players also like to use acts of sabotage. The cause of destructive behavior almost always lies in the leadership style.

7. Silence when the boss is present

Is there strict silence in the office? Then the boss is guaranteed to be coming. Anyone who dares to exchange a word with a colleague now becomes suspicious of doing nothing. In contrast, colleagues in “normal” companies chat with each other even when the manager approaches – a sign of an intact relationship of trust.
