Pathways for diagnosis

Thyroid ultrasound is an essential way to evaluate thyroid nodules. The American Thyroid Association points out that it is a very accurate test with which it can determine whether a nodule is solid or filled with fluid (cystic), and determine its size.

“Ultrasound can also identify suspicious nodules since some ultrasound features are more common in nodules with thyroid cancer than in nodules that are not cancer. Thyroid ultrasound can also identify nodules that are too small to detect on physical examination. It is also used to guide the needle directly to the nodule when the doctor thinks a biopsy is necessary,” the association notes.
