And alligator about 9 feet long attacked a dog near a pond at Constitution Park in Deerfield Beach.

The incident occurred last Thursday, the reptile emerged from the water, opened its jaws, grabbed the dog and swam away, the animal’s owner told the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission, according to Local 10 News.

One man, who is a frequent visitor to the park, said it was surprising that reptiles of this type still exist in Deerfield.

After the animal was attacked, the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission sent a specialist to the pond, who captured thel alligator, near where children and pets often play.

The dog was found dead on Friday.

Sheila Kramer, a resident near the site, recorded a video of the reptile after the specialist captured it and stated that she had never seen such an animal there.

This tragic incident adds to other similar cases in the state. In February of this year, a alligator killed an 85-year-old woman while defending her dog, in St. Lucie County.
