90-year-old Cuban lives in a cave in Santiago de Cuba

According to the Diario de Cuba website, a Cuban 90 years lives in a cave located in the Tercer Frente municipality, in the province from Santiago de Cuba, as denounced on Facebook the user Petronilo del Río. “It’s called Salvador Ortega and the cave is located in Alto del Indio, in the town of Las Bocas,” warned the Internet user who shared a video of the cave.

“In recent years, Salvador, who is also known as El Nene, lives in an isolated hole in society. His choice of life was not by choice, but because he had no other option,” he added to his post.

In the publication, the user pointed out that both the Government as well as the municipal authorities “They have abandoned Salvador and others like him.” He stressed that the situation of this old man is not unique, “it is similar to that of many other elderly living in poverty and loneliness in the Santiago municipality of Tercer Frente”. A reality that has been in charge of denouncing through several of his publications.

“After working hard all his life, he was ignored by people like compañera Isnalvis Salazar Galán, president of the Popular Council of Matías. Salvador had nowhere to sleep or who to turn to and he found himself forced to seek refuge in a cave isolated in the mountains,” he stressed in his complaint about Ortega.

He pointed out that “it is not easy” to live in a cave, that “does not have access to basic services such as water, electricity or medical care,” and that “he is forced to depend on the charity of others or what I can hunt or gather for myself” because he has no family or close friends who can care for him. “It is a crime against humanity that the responsible authorities in the municipality of Tercer Frente do not meet the basic needs of the elderly, especially those who are in extreme poverty,” he warned.

The complaint requires the local authorities not to forget their duty when it comes to “protect and care for the elderly”.

At the end of his complaint, he warned about the responsibility of the authorities of the country in a case like this and expressed that It is time for the Government to “comply” and “protect the elderly” that, like Salvador, they have no choice but to live in a cave”.
