A few weeks before the presidential elections in Turkey, incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced free natural gas supplies for the population.

In the coming month there will be unlimited amounts for all households, Erdogan said on Thursday at a ceremony for the inauguration of a natural gas plant.

After that, gas will be free up to a consumption of 25 cubic meters per month.

In the presidential election on May 14, Erdogan faces the greatest challenge since he came to power more than two decades ago.

According to recent polls, he trails behind Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the candidate of a six-party opposition coalition. (Reuters)
