Will President Erdogan remain in office? Hundreds of thousands of Turkish citizens in North Rhine-Westphalia are also in demand for the presidential election in Turkey.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, many people with a Turkish passport can cast their votes for the parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey from this Thursday. Around 500,000 people are entitled to vote and can vote at eight locations – including Düsseldorf, Essen, Hürth near Cologne and Greven near Münster. Of all federal states, most people of Turkish origin live in NRW. In Turkey, the elections will take place on May 14th.

Turks abroad can vote from Thursday

Turks abroad can go to the polls in many places from this Thursday (from 9 a.m.) until May 9th. At some locations – in NRW in Dortmund, Siegen, Aachen and Bielefeld – voting is only possible from April 29th to May 1st. Nationwide, around 1.5 million people are called to vote at one of the 26 polling stations. The Turkish Federation in North Rhine-Westphalia expects a high level of participation.

According to polls, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu (CHP) has a good chance of replacing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after 20 years in power. In the last election in 2018, more than two-thirds of Turkish voters in North Rhine-Westphalia voted for Erdogan. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) recently said: “It is to be expected that the Turkish government here will try to mobilize our Turkish fellow citizens as voters. The Turkish presidential elections are also having an impact on our security situation.” The security authorities are “attentively following the election campaign.”
