A judge rejects Trump's attempt to delay a lawsuit filed by Jean Carroll for defamation

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A Manhattan judge on Friday rejected former President Donald Trump’s attempt to delay the lawsuit filed by writer Elisabeth Jean Carroll against him while another appeal in the same case is resolved.

“Trump has not provided a single reason for the court to find that there is any likelihood that he will succeed on this appeal,” U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said in his ruling, NBC News reported.

Trump had asked the judge to delay the lawsuit while an appeal is resolved on another decision that Kaplan issued on June 29 and which determined that the former president did not have “presidential immunity” when he insulted Carroll in 2019.

In the sentence of May 9, the judge awarded Carroll compensation of five million dollars -more than 4.5 million euros- for assault and defamation. The new lawsuit filed by the writer seeks to increase the amount to reach 10 million dollars (about 9.2 million euros).

Carroll’s team filed the lawsuit over comments Trump made on CNN after her conviction, in which he called her a “nutty” and claimed that the writer’s claims were “false” and “invented” and that ” never met her.”

The case dates back to Carroll’s 2019 legal challenge in state court against Trump for defamation over the way the New York mogul denied an early rape claim, saying “she wasn’t his type” and that ” he did it to sell” his book.

The journalist wrote in her book ‘What do we need men for?’ that Trump sexually assaulted her in the changing rooms of a Manhattan store in the mid-1990s. According to her, she met Trump on Fifth Avenue in New York and they went to a lingerie store in Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store , to buy a gift for a woman, where the former president raped her.

This case adds a new judicial front to a Trump who, already immersed in the campaign for the Republican Party primaries, has several processes open for the classified documents and for his role in the electoral fraud conspiracy during the 2020 elections, in addition to his indictment for concealing a series of bribes paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
