The actress, tipped to land an Oscar nomination for her role in the biopic tilldenounces the systemic racism of Hollywood.

American actress Danielle Deadwyler strongly denounced this week the systemic racism of the Hollywood industry, while no black woman is nominated for the Oscar for best actress.

According to many commentators, the actress deserved to receive a nomination in this category for her performance in the biographical film tillabout a tragic event in the American civil rights movement.

“The history of cinema is over 100 years old. I dare say the system is deeply, deeply scarred by the systemic racism that has shaped our country,” she explained on the bbcbefore adding:

“And we continue to face systemic racism in this country, which led to the loss of Tire Nichols. […]. There is a trickle-down effect in the way racism impacts our lives – from the education system to the movie industry to everyday life.”

Viola Davis also snubbed

Danielle Deadwyler was campaigning for the Oscars for her film tillwhich looks back on the fate of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black teenager lynched in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of whistling in front of a white woman.

Chinonye Chukwu, screenwriter and director of tillsees the lack of a nomination for Danielle Deadwyler as a testament to Hollywood’s “uninhibited misogyny” toward black women.

Danielle Deadwyler isn’t the only black actress to be snubbed by the Oscars this year. Many critics were betting on a nomination for Viola Davis, who found great theatrical success with the epic film The Woman King.

Soon an Oscar for Angela Bassett?

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverAngela Bassett would be well placed to win the precious sesame on March 13.

Only one actress has won the Best Actress Oscar: Halle Berry in 2002 for In the shadow of hate. Nine black women also won Best Supporting Actress Oscars, including Hattie McDaniel in Gone with the wind.
