This February 5, the 2023 Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles, with a lot of stakes surrounding the 65th edition of these awards which, since 1958, have awarded prizes to the best artists and technicians in the music industry. We can speak of a historic ceremony this year since a record was broken: the evening saw the coronation of singer Beyoncé who, at only 32 years old, became the most crowned artist in American music with the titles of “Best R&B Song”, “Best Electronic/Dance Recording”, “Best R&B Vocal Performance” and “Best Electronic/Dance Album”. Her husband Jay-Z is the most nominated male artist in the history of these supreme awards. Despite Beyoncé’s supremacy over this event, for some specialists it was a duel at the top that we could observe between two monsters of the song: Beyoncé… and Adele.

Tears for Adele

After a prolonged absence from the music scene, the Briton made her big comeback at the end of 2021, to the delight of her fans, and very quickly regained her place as a song diva. And even if she did not win in all the multiple categories in which she was opposed to Beyoncé, this Sunday evening, it is especially her speech which will have won the votes with her fans. As she had just received the title of “best pop solo performance” for her title Easy on me, Adele said a few poignant words, especially to her 10-year-old son. Before joining the stage, the artist embraced her boyfriend Rich Paul, a basketball agent, before quoting him in his thanks: “If you win something, don’t cry”.

“Changing My Son’s Life”

Lost for Adèle, caught in the flood of her emotions: “I was so looking forward to coming tonight. I would like dedicate this award to my son, Angelo. And here I am crying, said the London artist, very moved, before referring to the genesis of her winning title, released in 2021. “I wrote the first verse in the shower, when I was making the choice to change my son’s life. He didn’t proof of humility, grace and humor to me all this time.” In this very sweet piece with autobiographical text, Adèle, who faced a divorce from the father of her son Simon Konecki, tells the story of an inevitable breakup and seeks explanations. “There was no room for things to change, when we were both stubborn. You can’t deny that I really tried. I changed who I was to put you first but now I give up”she sings in particular, echoing her confessions about her separation.
