San Salvador. After maintaining its headquarters in San Salvador for 25 years, the newspaper El Faro announced on Thursday, through the editorial “El Faro se cambia de casa”, that its administrative and legal operation “moves” to Costa Rica and will become a newspaper Central America due to the lack of conditions to continue operating in El Salvador.

The newsroom will continue to operate in El Salvador, but since April 1 of this year, El Faro is managed by the Periodical Foundation, in San José, Costa Rica.

“The dismantling of our democracy, the lack of controls on the exercise of power by a small group, the attacks on press freedom and the closure of all transparency and accountability mechanisms in El Salvador seriously threaten the citizen’s right to be informed. , beyond the large public resources allocated today to disseminate propaganda and false news,” the editorial detailed.

He pointed out that during the Bukele administration, the newspaper and its employees have been the target of delegitimization and defamation campaigns, as well as threats and espionage. He has also faced multiple audits by the Ministry of Finance of that country, to which they continue to appeal.

The newspaper pointed out precarious conditions to practice journalism in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
