The final frontier may still be far away for the crew of the USS Enterprise, although it has long been stated that the third season of Picard is a sort of farewell greeting between the Trekkies and the characters who have kept them company for the seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as several films on the big screen. The trailer for Picard and company’s next trip to the stars has all the flavor of a farewell, but to give hope to fans of Star Trek the showrunner of the series intervened, Terry Matalas, who specified how there could be a future for the Next Generation of Stark Trek after Picard.

After the reunion at Picardwill the Next Generation of Star Trek have a future in the saga?

In other media, this possibility has already materialized. Whether you look at the comics or the literary sector, there are various adventures that have seen Picard, Riker and company face new challenges, even in the period following the one in which Picard is set. While recalling that compared to the other famous science fiction franchise in Star Trek we do not have a canon that regulates the continuity between the different media, the idea that there are other inspirations to continue the saga of the crew trained in Meeting at Farpoint can only pique the curiosity of fans.

Objective perfectly achieved by Matalas, who during an interview with SFX did not fail to point out how there could be a future in Star Trek for the Next Generation after Picard:

They sure enjoyed making Picard Season 3, and they certainly can’t wait to do it again. I think there are ways to see these characters again, in a sort of ‘next next generation’ story. Maybe not all of these characters, I don’t mean that they will all come out unscathed from the third season. But it can be said that in science fiction, there is always a way to see people again. So obviously, who wouldn’t want to do this forever?

Joke that seems stolen from Star Trek: Generations, when in the wreck of the Enterprise-D a young Riker boldly claimed to his captain that he would live forever. It is no coincidence that Riker’s interpreter, Jonathan Frakes, recently reiterated that Picard would not have been his last trip to the stars with Star Trekbut we must not forget that the actor has already played the role of the character only vocally in Star Trek: Lower Decksanimated series available on Prime Video, and who in the role of director has made an important contribution to the development of the saga, both in cinema and sitting in the director’s chair of various series of the franchise, such as enterprise, discovery or Strange New Worlds.

What will be the future of the Next Generation in Star Trek after Picard, Trekkies will be delighted to see such beloved characters back in action. The possibility offered by cross-media, however, can prove to be an atypical tool for guaranteeing these returns, allowing actors to interpret their characters only vocally, as happened not only to Frakes but, recently, also to Kate Mulgrew, who gave voice to her Kathryn Janeway for the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.
