Today, the government gives the State Office the task of evaluating how the county administrations and the police are able to protect the public against dog attacks. Around 4,000 people seek care every year after being bitten by a dog.

– The purpose of this is that fewer people are simply injured by dogs. The number of dog bites is at far too high levels. In addition, it happens that people die from the injuries and that is completely unacceptable.

The investigation must provide answers to whether the law needs to be changed, how the authorities cooperate and whether they solve their tasks effectively. The answer to these questions must be reported to the government on February 28 next year.

The law can change

It was after the dog attack in Robertsfors where a woman in her 60s died as SVT examined several cases where the county administrations haveor have not, taken action against dogs and their owners.

The review showed that few reports to the county administrations led to action and that there is no possibility to follow up on the few decisions that have been made. Peter Kullgren then announced that the government would review the problem and start a major investigation, which is now happening. The minister is also open to the possibility that a change in the law may be required.

– We are not closing any doors, it is possible that the outcome will be that you have to change some legislation as well, says Peter Kullgren.
