INDEC finally backed down with the decision to postpone the dissemination of cost of living data, after the controversy generated by the measure. The director of INDEC, Marco Lavagna, informed that the announced changes in the anticipated calendar will be without effect and the technical reports will be disseminated on the dates originally established twelve months ago. Lavagna regretted that the intention to separate the statistical work of the Institute from the electoral process was “misinterpreted and suspicions were aroused about the integrity of the INDEC technical teams”

“We consider that it is a good practice not to provide statistical information in the middle of the closure but, given the controversy caused, the four dates will remain in their originally established scheme,” said the official.

“We apologize and soon the dates will be restored on the website www.indec.gob.ar,” said INDEC. In the morning, the statistics institute had announced the decision to postpone the release of the inflation index for April amid the tension due to the escalation of prices. The agency had moved the date of departure of the variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from Friday, May 12 to Monday, May 15. The agency had explained that the current official calendar was diagrammed prior to the announcement of the election dates in several provinces and, consequently, reports were detected that coincided with electoral closures, which forced several changes. In the case of inflation in April, he had explained that it should be postponed since on Sunday the 14th they vote in Salta, Tucumán and Tierra del Fuego. Finally, the changes were without effect and the data will be known as initially planned.
