In the aftermath of the coronation of Charles III and Camilla, the festivities continue in the United Kingdom. This Sunday noon, the British were invited to gather to celebrate the “Big Lunch”, a convivial meal to share with neighbors, relatives or strangers.
According The Independent, nearly 67,000 meals were planned across the UK to celebrate the coronation. To participate in these giant picnics, every Briton had to pay a’starter (between 5 and 10 euros on average) and come with your own meal, to share with the people seated next to you.
On the menu: cookies, cupcakes and other cakes were to be found on the tables across the streets of London as well as the famous “coronation quiche”, whose recipe was unveiled in mid-April by Buckingham Palace.
The “Big Lunch” is an initiative launched in 2009 by the’charity Eden Project Communities. Its purpose is to fight against’social isolation and loneliness by encouraging communities to come together and share an annual meal with their neighbours.
Tables set up in Downing Street
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak s’is also on loan’exercise. He and his wife, Akshata Murty, have set up several tables at the’exterior of Downing Street – street where the Prime Minister’s residence is located.
Rishi Sunak had invited for the’opportunity for local heroes, volunteers, Ukrainian families and youth groups to join in the street food. Among the guests was also Jill Biden, the wife of the American president.
In addition to the tasting of the “coronation quiche”, the guests also had the’opportunity to drink tea served in “King Charles III” cups, made in a limited edition for the’event.
Walkabout for Kate and William
S’they did not sit at the table to eat, William and Kate took advantage of the “Big Lunch” festivities to take a walk. The Prince and Princess of Wales paid a surprise visit to Britons in Windsor ahead of the coronation concert scheduled for the city this Sunday evening.
L’event will take place at Windsor Castle in front of 20,000 people. The Prince of Wales must notably deliver a speech during the show. Also expected on stage are artists Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, tenor Andrea Bocelli, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and pianist Lang Lang.
