After the riots on New Year’s Eve in Berlin with attacks on emergency services, Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) believes that quick consequences are necessary. “The state must function and there must be no legal vacuums,” Woidke told the “Potsdamer Latest News” (Saturday).

It’s about integration, but also a clear reaction from the state so that something like this doesn’t happen again. He thinks it’s good that Berlin’s governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) invited to a summit to find common solutions.

Regarding the Berlin initiative for stricter no-gun zones, Woidke said that one could think about it, but it was not a panacea. “For Brandenburg itself, however, I don’t see that we need that.”

On the night of New Year’s Day, police officers and firefighters were attacked in several German cities, including with firecrackers and rockets. The attacks were particularly violent in some Berlin districts. 145 people with a total of 18 different nationalities were initially arrested there. According to the police, there were five cases of attacks on police officers in East Brandenburg in Brandenburg. (dpa)
