Alejandro Moreno may remain as president of the PRI (Cuartoscuro)

The national president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Alejandro alito Moreno Cárdenas, could continue to lead the tricolor until 2024, since the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF) revoked the refusal that prevented said movement, according to a decision issued by the National Electoral Institute (INE).

With five votes in favor and two against —on behalf of magistrate Janine Otálora and Reyes Rodríguez Mondragón—, the project of magistrate José Luis Vargas was approved, so that the PRI member would have free passage to request the extension of the mandate and not call internal elections to designate a new leadership This is in reference to the national electoral process that will take place next year and the internal stability of the organization.

According to experts from the country’s highest electoral court, the modifications to the statutes that the PRI’s National Political Council (CPN) made in December 2022 are viable because they were carried out in a body that has the power to create such statutory movements within the party.

Likewise, although it was accused that there was not enough time for the members of the CPN to analyze the modifications, the magistrates explained that the changes were submitted 48 hours before before the session began, so there was enough time for them to refer to the agenda, it was even justified that there was a quorum necessary for it to be a legal meeting.

During the session, Judge Vargas Valdez called to respect the right of self-determination of political partiesas well as endorse an extension of the National Leadership of the PRI, because it would comply with what is established in the identity documents of the tricolor.

“The party complied with the procedure provided in its own regulations for the National Political Council to approve the modifications to the statute”

And it is that the magistrate also considered that the decision of the INE represented a alleged intrusion into internal life of the Institutional Revolutionary, because the decision was endorsed by an internal deliberation body, which represents all the sectors that make up the political institute.

Likewise, magistrates Mónica Soto and Felipe Puentes seconded what Vargas said, since they detailed that all political parties have the power to make adjustments to the provisions of its internal organization and that it responds to the new political reality.

Meanwhile, magistrate Janine Otálora announced that there was no due justification so that the CPN is the competent body to modify the statutes, since he recalled that the documents establish said power to the National Assembly.

“It would be to give an open letter to the (National) Political Council to modify any issue of the Statute, at any time and only render a report to the assembly, which would be contrary to what is established and makes it an ordinary power of said body,” was the justification issued by the magistrate.

Despite the justification of Reyes Mondragón and Janine Otálora, the project was approved and the INE was ordered to issue a new resolution that responds to what the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary determined this Wednesday, April 26.

“The controversial resolution is revoked. The constitutional and legal origin of the reformed portions that were the subject of study is declared, in terms of the enforceability. The INE is ordered to issue a new resolution in terms of this execution”, were the words with which the resolution ended.

It should be remembered that the resolution was given when the National Electoral Institute was still chaired by Lorenzo Córdova. The collegiate body assured that the changes did not respond to what the statutes said.
