As stated in Charts data on Twitter, the artist’s track broke the record for the most listened to track in one day on Spotify with 21.27 million streams recorded during Christmas Eve. A record to which Mariah Carey was quick to react on Twitter.

“Merry Christmas everyone!!! Didn’t expect to wake up to this amazing surprise!!!!” she commented.

Title of “Christmas queen” and accusation of plagiarism

Released in 1994 on Mariah Carey’s fourth album, Merry Christmas, All I Want for Christmas is You has sold 14 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist.

Written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, this title made more than $60 million, according to a magazine estimate. Forbes in 2019.

Mariah Carey, who now capitalizes on this time of year and on the success of this song, had also tried to register the status of “Christmas queen” as an official trademark but this request had been refused.

Last June, country artist Andy Stone also filed a complaint that the track plagiarized one of his songsalso titled All I Want for Christmas is You and performed by Vince Vance & The Valiants in 1989. The suit has since been dropped.
