Almost 200,000 Cubans live in Spain, a record number of exiles

MADRID.- The National Institute of Statistics of Spain (INE) indicated that nearly 200,000 Cubans live in the European country, this being the highest number since records of the foreign population residing in Madrid have been recorded.

The official record available for last year. It is also noted that until January 2023, the records count 198,639 people born in Cuba living in Spain. Of this total number, 73,548 have the category of residents, and the rest have become Spanish nationals.

However, the record indicates that the greatest growth occurred after the 11J repression when 22,000 Cubans fled to Spain. The graphs show that in 2002 there were only 52,701 Cubans registered, compared to almost 200,000 a year ago.

In the case of political asylum requests, the INE estimates that Cuba ended 2023 with 3,082 cases and was fifth on the list of countries. This registration represents more than double the requests of the previous period.

In 2022, the Government of Spain granted 16,196 visas to Cuban citizens, including tourism, studies and airport transit, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The INE reported that the general population of Spain stood at 48,592,909 inhabitants as of January 1, 2024.
