Warning: Spoilers for the Wano Arc in One Piece
This past weekend, all eyes in the anime industry were on the One Piece Chapter 1071. Luffy’s Gear 5 has instantly become a classic moment in the genre’s history, though many have dismissed this transformation as opportunistic and unbelievable.
However, few know that Eiichiro Oda had been thinking about this moment for a long time, specifically, since the first chapter of the series. In episode 1 of the manga, titled Romance Dawn: Dawn of an Adventure, we see how Luffy eats the Gomu Gomu no Mi. without warning, granting him the rubber powers.
And although it seems that this is only the first precedent of the power of luffya few pages later we see something revealing that the anime did not present at the time and that is very important today: when Luffy is talking to a salesperson, he comments that, since he ate the fruit, he is a happier boy thanks to the new power he has acquired.
More than a thousand chapters later, we know that Luffy’s true power is having ridiculous powers with which to make people happy, so Oda was already leaving us clues about the awakening of the fruit milestone milestone from the beginning. Of course, the mangaka does not leave anything open and is capable of linking different moments of the plot to make sense of the One Piece story.
We don’t know what the future holds for the Straw hatbut we are sure that Oda has already left us hints of what will happen between now and the end of the series in panels and phrases that still sound cryptic or have double meanings.
