By decree, the President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador created the Commission in charge of national coordination to combat the illicit trafficking of synthetic drugs, firearms and their ammunition.
According to the decree published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF), of this April 12, the Commission has the objective of acting as a special working group for the follow-up of the actions carried out by the dependencies and entities of the Federal Public Administration against the illicit traffic of synthetic drugs, firearms and their ammunition.
Among its functions is coordinating actions of the agencies and entities, in the fight against the illicit trafficking of synthetic drugs, and firearms and their ammunition; design and promote strategic collaboration actions and strategic public policies to combat these issues to preserve the National security.
In addition, propose necessary actions to celebrate international agreements in relation to the matter; verify compliance with international agreements signed by the Mexican State on the matter; evaluate policies and strategies carried out by the three levels of government in the matter, promote the exchange of information between them and in the international arena on drug, arms and ammunition trafficking.
The DOF stipulated that the new Commission will report directly to the head of the federal Executive and will include the following public servants:
- The head of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, who will preside over it
- The head of the Ministry of the Interior
- The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- The head of the Ministry of National Defense
- The Secretary of the Navy
- The Secretary of Health
- The heads of the Financial Intelligence Unit and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office
- The head of the National Guard
- That of the National Intelligence Center of the SSPC
The position held by each official in the Commission will be of an honorary nature; They will have the right to speak and vote, and they will be able to designate their respective substitutes, who must have, at least, the next lower level.
On the other hand, it was indicated that the General Prosecutor of the Republic He will be a permanent guest with voice, but no vote within the Commission, and when required – depending on the nature of the issues to be discussed, at the proposal or request of the members – other public servants of the three orders of authority may be invited. government or any other public and private body and may participate in the sessions, but without vote.
The sessions of the Commission will be held when called by the President of Mexico and the agreements will be reached by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the President of the Commission will have the casting vote.
