The women’s shelters in Brandenburg receive more financial support from the state. In the future, residents should no longer have to pay for the accommodation themselves per day. With the double budget for 2023/24, one million euros more are available for women’s shelters per year. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, the 24 protective facilities received a good two million euros from the state in 2022.

Social and Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) told the dpa: “We can now finance the women’s own contribution to the costs of accommodation in the women’s shelter. That was very stressful for women who are in existential need.”

Women and 566 children were admitted to Brandenburg’s women’s shelters in 2021.

Until now, the women concerned had to contribute to the costs of a place in the women’s shelter. According to the ministry, this was usually less than ten euros per person and night. In 2021, the facilities had taken in 447 women and 566 children to protect them from violence.

Part of the additional state funds approved for women’s shelters is also earmarked for wage increases for employees. So far it has been difficult to find staff for the women’s shelters at all, since the last wage increase was years ago, said Nonnemacher.

In September, the Minister of Social Affairs spoke of the fact that the protective facilities would be used even more due to the consequences of the corona pandemic and the Ukraine war. The employees are at their breaking point. The network of women’s shelters had complained that there were not enough places in the facilities in the country. (dpa)
