Four cute babies are expanding the dwarf otter family at Duisburg Zoo. Their names have something to do with the TV show Sesame Street.
Four baby dwarf gods are currently creating a cozy atmosphere in Duisburg Zoo. Since their birth at the end of November, the little otters have spent most of their time in their protective den, but they are slowly becoming more curious and exploring their surroundings. Now zoo veterinarian Dr. Carolin Bunert examined the young animals for the first time. In the subsequent naming ceremony, a television series is honored.
One male and three females expand the existing dwarf otter family at the Kaiserberg. This became clear after a first medical check-up of the young animals, so that nothing stood in the way of the naming. Area manager Philipp Goralski explains: “Even before we knew the gender of the current offspring, we decided to name the little ones after characters from Sesame Street.”

The reason for this is the 50th anniversary of the popular children’s series this year. Names like Oscar or Cookie Monster were also on the shortlist, but in the end the animal keepers who looked after them decided on Samson, Tiffy, Elma and Finchen.
After the veterinary examination, Dr. Bunert very happy with the baby dwarf gods. Before that, she listened to the lungs and heart, checked the navel and took a look into the little mouths. “All four are alert, well and have mastered the examination in an exemplary manner and without much nagging,” says the veterinarian happily.

Asian dwarf otters live in family groups of around twelve animals and are considered a very social animal species. Within their group, the dwarf otters communicate by loud calls. Due to the loss of habitat and illegal animal trade in Asia, the animals are threatened in their original range. The species is therefore classified as “endangered”.
