Last year an ai-generated image won an art competition in the US. Now a German photographer, Boris Eldagsen, has repeated the feat by winning the Sony world photography awards with an image created with AI.

On its website he writes that he did it “to see if photo contests prepared for ai images to be submitted”.

“We, the photography world, need an open discussion about what counts as a photo or not,” he writes further on his site.

Boris Eldagsen won the competition but refused to accept any prize.

“Given his actions and statement noting his deliberate attempt to mislead us, we no longer feel we can have a meaningful and constructive dialogue with him,” a spokesperson for the World Photography Organization told The Guardian.
