Apple has introduced a new second-generation HomePod for 349 euros, and the HomePod mini is now equipped with new tricks (and 10 euros more expensive at Apple – now 109 euros). The latest update of the HomePod software has brought some new features. The change log shows, for example, that Apple has improved the sound of the ambient noise. They are also available on the iPhone, on the HomePod you can now also use them practically in (wake-up) routines. How this works is described here – and if you have never used ambient noise before, you will definitely be smarter afterwards.

What are the ambient sounds and how can I start them?

  • “Hey Siri, play Bach sounds.”
  • “Hey Siri, play fireplace sounds.”
  • “Hey Siri, play ocean sounds.”
  • “Hey Siri, play white noise.”
  • “Hey Siri, play forest sounds.”
  • “Hey Siri, play Night Sounds”
  • “Hey Siri, play rain sounds.”

They then run until you stop. For a good night’s sleep you can also say: “Hey Siri, set a 30-minute sleep timer.” Of course, you can adjust the time to suit your needs. You can also choose specific sounds by saying “Hey Siri, play rain in the living room” or “Hey Siri, play ocean sounds in the bedroom.”

Apple HomePod: Ambient noise as an alarm clock:

If you work on the iPhone, you can also set an alarm clock. For example, you can use the Home app to call up the properties of a HomePod. There you will find the item “Alarm clock”, by clicking on “Add” you set your desired time. Under “Play media” you can select media, including the aforementioned ambient sounds.

Ambient sounds in routines:

In principle, I certainly don’t have to explain how to create automations via the Home app. When this happens, then that happens. This also works with the ambient noise or music in general via the HomePod. So you can create a routine that when a sensor detects something, an ambient noise sounds. You have a sensor that turns on the light in the bathroom when you enter it? Then you can also specify that the HomePod then plays ocean sounds.

The whole thing can be selected as part of the automation if you select the HomePod under Devices and select the desired one in the Audio item. Sure, there are umpteen possibilities, when you’re away you could also let a dog bark if you select the appropriate sound.
