The ARD helps schoolchildren to distinguish truth from fakes around the day of press freedom on May 3rd. Because this day is also the occasion of the school media days in many federal states on the subject of media competence.

“Enemies of our democracy try to divide society with disinformation and fake news. The ARD works against this and promotes a lively democracy and social cohesion, not least through many media literacy projects. A lack of media literacy is a danger to democracy,” says ARD chairman Kai Gniffke.

How to recognize fake information? Media experts from Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), for example, clarify this question in a Online School Lessons. And that, among others, together with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, the “Medienanstalt Hessen” and the “Deutsches Filminstituts & Filmmuseums”. ARD is not alone in the fight against fake news.

“simple.media”, the media competence portal of the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR), brings journalists together with schoolchildren North German Broadcasting workshops in Hamburg and Lower Saxony together. And the NDR also has strong partners: as part of the cross-media initiative “Journalism makes school” he invites more than 200 students to the Central Committee in Hamburg for the theme day “Research cleverly: We won’t let ourselves be manipulated!”.

The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) also visits schools for the “Journalism meets School” network. The children’s offer “MDR-Tweens” produces in a class in Thuringia, for example, the media magazine ” Tween Screen“.

The Bayrischer Rundfunk (BR) shows, among other things, that it is not easy to report freely everywhere in the world. In Webtalk want that Ina Ruck (ARD Studio Moscow) and Mike Lingenfelser (ARD Studio Tel Aviv) impart to the students.

Together with news editors from Südwestrundfunk (SWR), schoolchildren check news for its credibility – on site in the classes in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate with the project ” News professionals in school“.
