The army has taken part in the world’s largest cyber exercise in the past few days. As announced by the Ministry of Defense, 2,800 experts from 38 nations are taking part in the “Locked Shields 23” exercise organized by the NATO Cyber Defense Center (CCDCOE) in Tallinn, Estonia.

Austria must prepare “for subconventional attacks and threats” such as cyber attacks from outside, emphasized Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) in a broadcast today.

Simulated defense against attacks

Locked Shields 23 began on April 11th and ends today. After a week of team building and preparation, the practice phase followed, in which the teams counteracted a series of cyber attacks under time pressure, according to the broadcast.

According to a CCDCOE broadcast, NATO countries and their partners are taking part in the exercise. They form two teams, one red and one blue. The members of the blue team are tasked with defending real computer systems against attacks. “Teams can demonstrate how they keep systems running in real situations and under high pressure,” said NATO CCDCOE Director Mart Noorma.
