No mainboard manufacturer has covered itself in glory with the voltage problem of the Ryzen 7000 processors. Excessively high voltages supplied by the mainboards could lead to defective processors and mainboards, especially after activating the memory overclocking function AMD Extended Profiles for Overclocking (EXPO).

BIOS updates with the new AMD Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture (AGESA) should fix the source of the error, primarily by limiting the SOC voltage to 1.3 volts. However, early beta BIOS versions did not always implement this limitation correctly: In the case of Asus observed the Youtube channel Gamers Nexus too high voltages despite BIOS update and at Gigabyte the website Hwbusters. MSI applied too high voltages with beta BIOS versions without the new AGESA.

Asus caused a particularly great deal of irritation with a new warning in the BIOS: If you wanted to load an EXPO profile to increase the clock frequency of the DDR5 RAM, a pop-up warned of possible problems since the system was being operated outside of the specifications.

The implicit warning: Asus does not pay for possible damages, which is understandable from a purely legal point of view. Overclocking – if only for memory – has always voided the warranty. So far, this has just not been communicated so offensively.

The reactions ultimately caused a reversal. Asus writes on its own websitethat memory overclocking and using beta BIOSes no longer violate AM5 motherboard warranties. In addition, the latest versions should implement the voltage limits correctly.

“We would like to assure our customers that both beta and fully validated BIOS updates for Asus’ AM5 motherboards are covered by the original manufacturer’s warranty. We would also like to confirm the following points:

1. The Asus AM5 motherboard warranty also covers all AMD EXPO, Intel XMP and DOCP memory configurations.

2. All current BIOS updates follow the latest AMD voltage guidelines for AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series processors.”
