Asus and Microsoft are now targeting the Steam Deck. In cooperation with AMD, the aim is to soon offer a handheld PC based on Windows 11 in the form of a mobile game console at prices starting at 699 euros, which will outshine Valve’s model in many respects.

The Asus ROG Ally has been haunting rumors for some time, although a few days ago it became apparent that the device equipped with an AMD Z1 (Extreme) processor with a 7-inch touchscreen and the controls of a gaming controller is not quite popular in Europe would be as cheap as the Valve Steam deck.

From mid-June, the Asus ROG Ally with AMD Z1 Extreme SoC will also be available in Germany, with the more expensive variant with the stronger platform coming onto the market first, which at 799 euros is significantly more expensive, at least in Europe, than the most expensive version for 679 Euro available Valve Steam Deck. The “economy version” with the less powerful AMD Z1 “non-extreme” will be available for 699 euros, but will not be available until the third quarter.

Equipment more than comparable

With the ROG Ally from Asus, the customer gets more for his money than with Valve. The Windows-based counterpart to the Steam Deck has a full HD display that can display content more smoothly and sharply at at least 30 and up to 120 Hertz. The main memory is also always 16 gigabytes in size and, depending on the model, there is a 256 or 512 gigabyte NVMe-based SSD on board. Additional features include a 40-watt-hour battery, a 3.5mm jack for headsets, a combo USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort 1 support, and a microSD card reader for memory expansion. The new AMD chips in the ROG Ally use the Zen 4 CPU architecture and an AMD RDNA 3-based graphics unit and are said to offer 2.8 to 8.6 TFLOPs of performance, depending on the variant.

If required, an external graphics unit can also be connected via a proprietary connection, in whose housing a maximum of one Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 can be used. The fact that Microsoft is heavily involved in the background can be seen, among other things, from the fact that buyers of the ROG Ally from Asus always get a three-month membership for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
