At least 22 people dead after several storms

At least 22 people have died after severe storms hit several states over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky were the hardest hit, leaving a wide trail of destroyed homes, businesses and power outages.

Forecasters said severe weather could move to the East Coast later Monday and warned millions of people to head outside for the holiday to watch the skies.

A tornado watch was issued from North Carolina to Maryland.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who had declared a state of emergency, said at a news conference Monday that five people had died in his state.

The fifth death was a 54-year-old man who suffered a heart attack while cutting down fallen trees in Caldwell County, western Kentucky, the governor’s office reported.

President Biden said FEMA is on the ground conducting damage assessments and has reached out to governors to see what federal support they might need.
