At least three people died in a collision between a bus and a passenger vehicle

PENNSYLVANIA – At least three people were killed and others injured after a bus carrying up to 50 people and a passenger vehicle crashed on a Pennsylvania freeway Sunday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred shortly before 11:50 pm ET Sunday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, but police said the bus, which was carrying between 45 and 50 people, was flipped on its side after the collision.

At least three people were pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

Some were also taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from “minor to critical,” police said. He added that they could not yet provide a number for how many people had been injured.

The freeway was closed to the south between exits 77 and 72. It was unclear when it would reopen.

The Chambers Hill Fire Department was designated as a place for passengers and their loved ones to gather.

Police said more information will be provided as it becomes available.
