According to the police, a bomb attack was carried out on the car convoy of the politically controversial Prosecutor General of Bulgaria, Ivan Geshev.

Geschew was not injured in the violent explosion this afternoon, it said. The explosive device was filled with metal balls and could have been deadly, explained Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borisslav Sarafov. “It is obviously a professionally prepared attack.”

Coincidence is said to have prevented death

A coincidence prevented the death of Geschev and his family, said Sarafov, who heads the EU country’s investigative agency. According to official information, the explosive device exploded next to a country road not far from the town of Samokov, which is about 50 kilometers south of the capital Sofia. Geschew was in one of several vehicles in a convoy. The assassination came in the midst of a government crisis that continued after the April 2 parliamentary elections.

Geschev was elected Prosecutor General of Bulgaria by the Supreme Judicial Council in 2019 – during the third and last term of office of the then Prime Minister Boiko Borissov. Since then, the anti-Borisov camp and demonstrators have repeatedly called for his resignation.
