With $2.244 billion in worldwide revenue, the sequel to James Cameron’s franchise ranks behind Avengers: Endgame and the first part ofAvatar.

It’s official. Almost two months after its release, Avatar: The Waterway surpasses Titanic at the worldwide box office. With 2.244 billion dollars in revenue, the sequel to James Cameron’s franchise thus becomes the third biggest success in cinema history, behind Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and the first installment ofAvatar ($2.92 billion).

Since its release in 1997, titanic totaled 2.194 billion dollars in box office revenue worldwide but, thanks to its 3D reissue released in February in theaters, the film now reaches 2.243 billion dollars in revenue.

Biggest success in France for 12 years

Director James Cameron, to whom we owe titanic, Avatar And Avatar: The Way of the Waterthus sees three of his films among the five most profitable feature films in the history of cinema.

In France, Avatar: The Way of the Water also broke several records. With 13,366,309 entriesJames Cameron’s blockbuster is now the biggest hit at the French box office since the release of Intouchables in 2011.

Avatar: The Waterway is also the biggest success of an American film in France since the release of the first Avatar in 2009 (15,340,969 admissions) and the 16th biggest success in the history of cinema in France, just behind The Bridge over the River Kwai by David Lean released in 1957 (13,481,750 admissions).

Since its release in December, Avatar 2 has also received numerous awards, including a nomination for Best Picture Drama and Best Direction at the 80th Golden Globes ceremony, as well as four nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
