The Golden Globes awards ceremony is considered by many to be a landmark event for the Oscars. Something for film fans to keep on the screen.

Read here who is nominated for a Golden Globe, where to watch the ceremony and everything else about the “Golden Globe Awards” 2023.

Where are the Golden Globes 2023 on TV and in the stream?

The Golden Globes cannot be seen on free TV in Germany. However, the award ceremony can be followed live on Sky on January 11 from 2 a.m. (local time: January 10 at 8 p.m.).

What are the Golden Globe Awards?

The “Golden Globe Awards” honor the best cinema productions and television programs every year. The award ceremony is organized by film journalists (“Hollywood Foreign Press Association”, in short: HFPA).

The award ceremony takes place as a gala dinner. The guest list: the crème de la crème of the Hollywood elite.

In 2004, the award ceremony was in Beverly Hills, just like this year: Michael Douglas, winner of the “Cecil B. DeMille Award” for his life’s work, gives Danny DeVito a kiss

Why are the “Golden Globes” controversial?

In 2021, the “Golden Globes Awards” came under heavy criticism. The reason: in its 78 years there was not a single black journalist on the jury. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association then announced that it would add at least 20 new members in 2021, mostly blacks.

Netflix and Amazon announced their boycott of the Golden Globes. The US broadcaster NBC did not broadcast the 2022 award ceremony for the first time in 25 years. There was no gala in 2022: the winners were announced online.

Now the 80th Anniversary Awards Ceremony is back – red carpet and movie stars included. The promise: New infrastructure, new faces, colorful and diverse “Golden Globes”.

Who decides on the awarding of the “Golden Globes”?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, HFPA, is made up of 105 film journalists from around the world who carry out their work in Hollywood. You decide on the awarding of the “Golden Globes”. The production houses send the application to the HFPA no later than ten days after the premiere of their film.

Then, in November, each member of the HFPA will receive a ballot. All films and programs that have qualified are noted there. Each journalist selects five works in each category and awards the points they are entitled to: 5 is the highest number of points a member can award. Whoever collects the most points will be nominated.

The nominees will be announced in mid-December. The HFPA members then vote again. The work or actor with the most points wins that category.

By the way: Barbra Streisand holds the record for most wins. The multi-talented artist has won the award ten times. Some of them were in the acting category, but one was also for her work as a director and for singing. There were also several honorary awards.

Meryl Streep won nine times in the acting category. Tom Hanks also had ten wins, some as a producer.

Who hosts the show?

Traditionally, the “Golden Globes” are presented by comedians: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (“Girls Club – beware snappy!”) were the hosts in 2022. The show took place without an audience due to the pandemic, so Fey was filmed in New York and Poehler in Los Angeles. In 2020, the British comedian Ricky Gervais (“The Office”) caused divided opinions with his controversial jokes – at the expense of the stars in the audience.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host this year’s Golden Globe Awards show in Beverly Hills.
