Babe Ruth jersey sets world auction record for sportswear

NEW YORK.- A t-shirt of Babe Ruthstar of the baseball team New York Yankees from the 1930s, sold for more than $13.3 million at an online auction on Thursday, the highest price ever achieved for a sports garment.

The online sale, organised by Heritage Auctions, will end on 24 August, which could push the price up to 30 million, Heritage Auctions experts predict.

At the current bidding price, the shirt has already smashed all records set in recent years for sports collectibles.

The record was held by a baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle, also a Yankees player, for which a collector paid $12.6 million in August 2022, at another sale organized by Heritage Auctions.

In September 2022, a Michael Jordan jersey fetched $10.1 million at an auction organised by Sotheby’s. The player had worn it during the first game of the NBA finals in 1998.

Over the past two years, sports memorabilia has shown growing interest from investors and collectors. Until 2022, no sports memorabilia had surpassed the $10 million threshold.

Now, the jersey worn by Babe Ruth (1895-1948) in a historic game against the Chicago Cubs in the World Series final in 1932 is about to shatter all records.

According to legend, the player pointed to the intended spot where he would hit the ball before hitting a home run.

The Yankees won the game and the final in four sets (4-0).

Macron and Milei meeting

French President Emmanuel Macron will welcome his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei in Paris on Friday, invited by the French government to the opening of the Olympic Games.

This “working meeting” will be the first between Macron and the ultra-liberal Argentine leader, who has been involved in several diplomatic incidents since his election.

Buenos Aires apologized to France last week for a comment by Vice President Victoria Villarruel, who called the European country “colonialist” and the French “hypocrites” in the face of racism, following a debate sparked by chants by the Argentine soccer team considered racist and homophobic.
