If by politics we understand “a way of exercising power with the intention of resolving or minimizing the conflicting interests that occur in a society”, López Obrador is not a politician, he is a provocateur who seeks to divide the country to strengthen his power.

There are still 18 months left in the government and every day the verbal violence on its part is greater. He is going to continue down the path of confrontation and disqualification because it is the only way he can justify the failure of his government to his bases. The opposition, however, cannot be equally irresponsible and fall into their game, they must get out of the ring, focus on proposals and call for unity and national reconciliation.

Continuing to pyramid verbal violence could lead to physical violence in the presidential elections in June of next year, violence that suits López Obrador to be able to reject the election result if he loses. The opposition has to return to politics to eliminate the risk of violence and call for dialogue and agreements with all sectors if we do not want the environment to continue to deteriorate.

For the president, the confrontation has been very convenient, but not for the opposition. His popularity remains very high and the opposition does not exceed 40% electoral support. In the melee the president moves like a fish in the water, in the dialogue he does not know what to do. You have to leave him without direct opponents and when he gets desperate we knock him out.

López Obrador has never known how to argue, he only knows how to disqualify and insult. He has no arguments, he only personally disqualifies anyone who says something against him. It is difficult for a fighter to beat another fighter, especially if the first one has control of the ring. To beat him you have to box him, not face him. We should have learned by now that in a hand-to-hand fight we are always going to win, let’s get out of the ring and have a different strategy.

In order to win, the opposition has to take away part of their followers from the president and Morena, and to achieve this, they have to make proposals and call for national reconciliation. It is not by continuing with the confrontation and disqualification that the opposition can win in 2024, but by making a total contrast with the way in which López Obrador is governing.

It is not possible that the agenda and the discourse of the opposition are defined by Reforma, Loret de Mola and Brozo and it is not possible that the best evaluated pre-candidates or candidates of the opposition are those who have the most offensive speech against the president and the government.

In order to win, the opposition must offer something different from what is currently available, and the main difference must be in the discourse and the call for national unity. The people are tired of the president’s shock speech and everyone, including his supporters, would welcome a new speech.

The dirty war continues to be won by President López Obrador and the opposition should have already learned that they will never win in this way. While the government calls for a division between liberals and conservatives, the opposition must call for reconciliation and national unity. Against their attacks and disqualifications, let’s call to unite to develop Mexico. While the president is dedicated to talking about the past, the opposition must talk about the future. The opposition agenda should not favor disqualification, but the proposal and national reconciliation.

Many people are outraged with President López Obrador and applaud those who insult and criticize him, but that is what he is looking for, that is where he feels comfortable and ensures his majority. His followers know that the government has failed in many things, but he does not accept it and shuts down when they attack “his president.”

To win, those who are against the president and the government are not enough, to win we need to convince part of his followers and we are not going to achieve that by attacking and insulting him.
