Pretty embarrassing!

That’s probably what everyone who worked in Berlin in 2021 on organizing the federal election and the election for the Berlin House of Representatives thought. Embarrassing, because so many things went wrong that the election – at least the national one – has to be repeated.

It didn’t take long for the first memes to appear.

Unfortunately, our brains are sometimes like sieves – something slips through very quickly or we forget half of it again.

So that the Berliners – or let’s be honest: actually only the still governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) – are not robbed of their most embarrassing experiences, we have selected the funniest memes for you.

Big Trouble in “Big B”

Franziska Giffey has been pulled through the cocoa since her resignation as Federal Minister for Family Affairs. Because: She resigned from her ministry because of a plagiarism scandal. Many people were angry that she was presented shortly afterwards as Berlin’s top candidate – and what better way to counter anger than with humor?

Well, it began with Giffey’s move into the Berlin City Hall. Super high rents, the corona pandemic, traffic and pollution, the apparent decline of the creative industry and the many mistakes made in long-term projects – such as the construction of Berlin Airport.

Giffey is clearly looking forward to her new challenges…

Frances Jane Umbridge

Apparently she wasn’t concerned with all the problems. The criticism of the Berlin mayor did not crack. And apparently Franziska Giffey exudes a very specific vibe – which only fuels meme producers.

For example, who could say he or she hadn’t thought of the despised Hogwarts Headmistress Dolores Jane Umbridge when he or she heard Franzi Giffey speak?

The movement “Deutsche Wohnen & Co Expropriation” certainly has that. As does one of their supporters, Moheb Shafaqyar.

But there was more, wasn’t there?

Super tight with Klitschko

Yes, of course: Franziska Giffey, for example, attracted attention again in the summer of 2022 because she had been taken in by a Russian satirist duo. That had held a video call with the Berlin mayor with a cheap trick – and pretended that it was Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko with whom Giffey was talking.

Giffey and her employees only noticed this fake after 15 minutes of conversation.

The meme bubble promptly filled, and all of Germany made fun of the incident. While most didn’t find this Russian quip all that funny, it was laughable that it was Giffey who was being screwed.

Careful with the pistol

Last but not least, THE meme photo that Germany knows from Giffey should not be missing. Giffey with gun.

In September 2022, Giffey traditionally opened the Berlin marathon with a starting gun. Actually nothing special. Her predecessor Michael Müller did the same. But that’s not Giffey, the meme machine.

Probably the most popular post on Twitter alluded to Giffey’s past as a politician in the Berlin district of Neukölln – and of course his criminal image. “Once Neukölln, always Neukölln.”

Then rather Giffey – the pioneer of the cheap Berlin kebab, right? On this meme she at least stands up for our rights with a gun.

Or Giffey, the “Alman-Anette”? After all, certain rules apply here in Germany. One of them is: woe betide you have water stains on your solid wood tile table!

Last, but not least: Giffey hearing that she has to defend her doctoral thesis. Well, we all know that something went wrong back then…
