The street name honoring of the “colonial warrior”, Freikorps chief and anti-Semite Georg Ludwig Rudolf Maercker has come to an end: on Friday, February 17, at 11 a.m., the Lankwitzer Maerckerweg will be given a new name. From now on, the Maria-Rimkus-Weg will commemorate a “Righteous Among the Nations”: Maria Rimkus had helped the heavily pregnant Jewish forced laborer Ruth Abraham and her family during National Socialism and, among other things, made it possible to flee Nazi Germany with forged passports. The celebration of the naming of the Maria Rimkus Path is public; it takes place at the corner of Maerckerweg and Emmichstraße.

In 1953, the State of Israel honored Maria Rimkus as “Righteous Among the Nations” at the Yad Vashem Memorial. Born in Lankwitz, she lived on Mörchinger Straße in Zehlendorf until her death in 2001. In 2020, the district assembly decided that the Maerckerweg should be renamed. In 2021, the district politicians then agreed on the new name.

Since 2011, the former senior citizens’ leisure center “Club Lankwitz” located at the municipal park has been called “Maria-Rimkus-Haus”. On the Website of the social welfare office Steglitz-Zehlendorf It says: “Maria Rimkus belongs to the group of silent heroes who helped their persecuted fellow human beings without much fuss and without expecting applause for it. On the contrary: Her philanthropy and belief as a Catholic pushed her to civil courage and charity. Without the testimony of people like Maria Rimkus, Steglitz-Zehlendorf would be poorer.”

In 1997, Maria Rimkus reported to the US Shoah Foundation about meeting the Abraham family. On Youtube is a Excerpt of the interview available (Screenshot above).
