Beware Chlorine: Houston Pools Become Toxic Traps

HOUSTON – In the height of summer, swimming pools become popular cooling havens to escape the heat in our city. However, an effort to keep the water clean and free of bacteria turned dangerous enough to send twelve people to the hospital on Saturday.

The exposure occurred just before 5 p.m. at a location in the Briarforest neighborhood, the Houston Fire Department said in a statement. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena said the cause “appears to be excessive chlorination in the swimming pools.” with symptoms of chlorine poisoning, including 7 minors.

Health and safety experts have warned of the dangers associated with this practice, which can have negative health consequences for swimmers.

Chlorine is a disinfectant widely used in swimming pools to eliminate bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms present in the water. However, when added in excess, it can produce a number of adverse health effects. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), chlorine in high concentrations can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract of those exposed. In addition, it can lead to the formation of harmful chemical byproducts, such as chloramines, which are linked to respiratory problems, asthma and allergies.

In addition to the negative effects on human health, overchlorination can also have a detrimental environmental impact. Excess chlorine can react with other chemical compounds present in the water, forming toxic by-products that can harm aquatic ecosystems and marine life.

Faced with this situation, health authorities and pool experts recommend following proper chlorination guidelines, regularly testing the chlorine level in the water, and properly training pool maintenance personnel. Likewise, it is essential to educate users about the dangers of overchlorination and encourage the responsible use of chemical products in pool care.
