This pair of red plastic XXL shoes with a cartoonish design was imagined by a collective of American artists, already at the origin of Lil Nas X’s “Satan Shoes”.
At first glance, you’d think they were straight out of a cartoon. For several days, the “Big Red Boots”, a pair of XXL red plastic boots with a cartoonish design, have invaded social networks.
Inspired by Astro Boy, a character from the manga series Astro, the little robot by Osamu Tezuka, these funny shoes have appeared on the feet of many celebrities such as the basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or rappers Lil Wayne and Fivio Foreign.
They also arouse the enthusiasm of Internet users. Evidenced by the many videos of these shoes on TikTok which count several tens of millions of views and this, even before the official release of the pair.
Designed by the MSCHF brand, acronym for mischief (“stupidity” in French), these big red boots will only be available for sale from February 16 for the modest sum of 350 dollars – a little less than 330 euros.
If these red boots owe their popularity to their unusual style, some Internet users have highlighted their uncomfortable side in everyday life. On TikTok, several users have shown that it was almost impossible to walk with these shoes in the street or that they were very difficult to remove once worn.
“Satan Shoes” with human blood
Accustomed to offering quite quirky and original fashion pieces, this is not MSCHF’s first high-profile creation. In 2021, this collective of artists from Brooklyn had already made a name for itself by offering a pair of “Satan Shoes” in collaboration with the artist Lil Nas X.
Based on the Nike Air Max 97 model, these shoes had the particularity of containing in their sole a drop of human blood from each member of the MSCHF collective.
Sold in a limited edition of 666 copies at more than 1000 dollars a pair, these shoes had at the time been the subject of a complaint from Nike, which ensured that they had been manufactured “without the approval or authorization of the company”.
