After Microsoft severely cut the new AI chatbot of its search engine Bing so that the system doesn’t “go astray” and deliver annoying, insulting or otherwise questionable answers, the muzzle is now being loosened somewhat.

Microsoft just pulled the line on Friday and limited the number of possible answers for each conversation with the AI chatbot based on ChatGPT and other technologies from the start-up company OpenAI, which is supported with billions by the software company, to just five per session. Only a total of 50 interactions should be possible per day.

From now on six interactions per session, maximum 60 a day

Now the team behind the AI bot available in Bing and the Edge browser has in a new blog entry explains that they want to gradually increase the limit from now on. Effective immediately, the number of “turns per session” will be increased to six. After that, the bot simply breaks off the conversation, as it has been doing for the past week, and asks for a new topic. At the same time, the number of possible requests per day increases to 60.

Citing the telemetry surrounding the service, Microsoft estimates that most users will be able to get the desired result within six interactions with the bot. In this context, a “natural daily use” of the Bing bot is possible, the developers explained. In the medium term, however, Microsoft would like to gradually increase the limit to 100 chats per day.

Three levels: precise, balanced, creative

At the same time, “normal” search queries to the AI should no longer count towards the limit, although this change is still a long time coming. In addition, another change is planned: users should be able to choose between three types of use.

Three modes are planned: Precise, where the Bing chatbot provides short, specific answers with an emphasis on searching for information. Microsoft calls the second variant “Creative”, whereby the bot is supposed to deliver longer and “more conversational” answers. The third variant is intended to provide a balance between precise and creative answers.

Microsoft only presented the GPT-based bot, which interacts with the user in natural language as a kind of artificial intelligence, just under three weeks ago, thereby exploiting the hype surrounding ChatGPT. Above all, the group wants to compete with Google as a search provider.

However, the developers said they underestimated the possible ways of interacting with the AI because many users used the service for “social entertainment” to explore its possibilities. The result was some strange and disturbing conversations, which is why Microsoft ultimately intervened.

Summary

  • Microsoft loosens the muzzle on its AI chatbot: six replies/session, 60/day, no limits for normal searches.
  • Users can choose between three modes: precise, balanced, creative.
  • AI chatbot based on OpenAI technology to compete with Google as a search provider.
  • number of possible Responses reduced due to usage for “Social Entertainment”.
  • Microsoft had underestimated the possible types of interaction.
