Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress and the Executive Branch building this Sunday, causing serious damage. There are protesters also in the Supreme Court building. The authorities of the neighboring country speak of an attempted attack on democracy by the protesters.

The mobilizations began around noon this Sunday. Everything was going on normally and was developing as other demonstrations had developed after the election last October in which Inacio Lula Da Silva prevailed over Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro supporters have protested Lula’s electoral victory since October 30, blocking roads, burning vehicles and congregating outside military buildings, calling on the armed forces to intervene.

But on this Sunday afternoon everything changed, violently the protesters advanced over the fences and the little police custody that was in place, and stormed the government buildings.

The incidents, which were reminiscent of what happened on January 6, 2021 at the US Capitol, come a week after leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in on January 1.

official voices

One of the first officials of Lula’s government to come out to demonstrate what is happening was the Minister of Justice and Public Security of Brazil, Flávio Dino, who stated that “this absurd attempt to impose the will by force will not prevail.” . The Government of the Federal District affirms that there will be reinforcements. And the forces at our disposal are at work. I am at the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice”.

Another of those who spoke was the president of the pro-government bloc of the Senate Randolfe Rodrigues, who stated “Attention! The president of PT Gleisi and I now represent the Attorney General’s Office so that intervention in the Public Security of the DF is decreed “. And he added, “I just spoke with the president of the National Congress, @rodrigopacheco, and they informed me that all legal measures are being taken. A message to Democrats: unite! We cannot tolerate the village house being attacked by terrorists. Democracy is stronger!”

For his part, Rodrigo Pacheco, president of the Senate and National Congress, explained on his social networks that he spoke by phone with the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha. “The governor informed me that he is concentrating the efforts of the entire police apparatus to control the situation. The security forces of the Federal District are compromised, in addition to the Legislative Police of Congress. I vehemently repudiate these undemocratic acts, which must be urgently submitted to the rigor of the law”.

Another of those who spoke was Sergio Moro, today a senator and leader of the Brazilian opposition, who, being a judge, sentenced Lula for a corruption case. “Protests must be peaceful. Invasions of public buildings and depredation are not answers. Opposition must be done democratically, respecting the law and institutions. Invaders must withdraw from public buildings before the situation escalates” , he claimed.
