MANCHESTER.- He Manchester City, Premier League champions completed the signing of Brazilian international Savinho on Thursday for a reported fee of 40 million euros ($43.6 million).
The 20-year-old forward – also known as Savio – was transferred from sister club Troyes in France and signed a five-year deal.
Savinho spent last season on loan with fellow club Girona of Spain and helped them qualify for the Champions League next season.
“I am very happy to join Premier League and Club World Cup winners Manchester City. Everyone knows they are the best team in the world at the moment, so to be here is exciting,” the player said in a statement.
Savinho was a standout in the Spanish league last season, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists.
He was part of the Brazilian team that played the America Cup and has played seven times for his country.
“Savinho is an exciting player and I think City fans will really enjoy watching him,” said sporting director Txiki Begiristain. “What he achieved last season with Girona was incredible and he is already a Brazilian international. He will play an important role for Manchester City this season and beyond.”
Troyes and Girona are part of the City Football Group, which also includes New York City and other teams from around the world.
MLS adds 14-year-old player:
Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan became the youngest player to make an appearance in MLS history — and likely in any of the world’s major professional sports leagues.
Sullivan, 14 years and 293 days old, came on as a substitute in the 85th minute of the game against the New England Revolution. He made his debut two weeks younger than Freddy Adu was in 2004, when he appeared in MLS.
Sullivan’s substitution, replacing forward Tai Baribo, came just after his 20-year-old brother Quinn scored to put Philadelphia up 5-1. That was the final score of the game.
