Businessman David González Cuellar, originally from Monterrey, Nuevo León, was murdered this Monday inside a cafeteria for allegedly resisting the theft of his “Rolex” watch in Tulum, Quintana Roo.

The businessman was the target of the alleged assault attempt carried out by members of a gang that, according to local reports, also operates in Cancun.

“The Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security in Quintana Roo managed to arrest three allegedly involved in the attempted assault and homicide of a person in a cafeteria in the Municipality of Tulum,” reported the State Secretariat for Public Security.

“After the events recorded this afternoon, the operation implemented allowed the seizure of three people, one of whom is hospitalized and available to the authorities for the corresponding investigations,” he said.

The crime arose after one of the armed subjects broke into the “Starbucks” establishment to assault the businessman, according to local information.

After allegedly resisting the robbery, an exchange of bullets broke out between the assailant and the businessman’s escort, identified as Luis Carlos.

The result of the shooting was the death of the businessman. In addition, the escort, originally from Chihuahua, and the assailant were injured.

For at least four years, the Ministry of Public Security has located a gang of criminals made up of Mexicans and foreigners, known as the “Roba Rolex”, related to numerous violent seizures of luxury watches.
